New Caney's History

New Caney started way back in 1862. It was first called Presswood. This name came from early settlers, Austin and Sarah Waters Presswood.

Other families, like Captain John Robertson, soon joined them. They opened cattle ranches, mills, and stores near Caney Creek. In 1877, a railroad line came to town. This made Caney Station a busy place for sending and receiving goods. It brought more businesses to the area.

In 1882, Presswood got its first post office. But the name "Caney" was already used by another Texas town. So, they named it New Caney instead. Soon, everyone started calling the community New Caney. The old name, Presswood, was no longer used.

In 1884, only sixty people lived in New Caney. By 1892, the town had grown to 150 residents. It had enough people to support several general stores. New Caney kept growing throughout the 1900s.
