New Concord is a small community located in Calloway County, Kentucky, United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

A Look at New Concord's Past

New Concord has an interesting history, especially with how it got its name.

How the Community Got Its Name

The area where New Concord now stands first opened a post office on March 2, 1836. At that time, it was called Humility, Kentucky. Later, in the late 1830s, new settlers arrived from a place called Concord, North Carolina. They decided to rename the community "Concord" after their old home.

However, there was already another town named Concord, Kentucky in Lewis County. To avoid confusion, the post office was renamed "New Concord" in 1861. The community officially became "New Concord" in 1868.

Fort Heiman: A Civil War Site Nearby

Just about one and a half miles southeast of New Concord, you can find a historic site called Fort Heiman. This fort was built by Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. It was a special place where they set up cannons to help protect their positions during the Battle of Fort Henry. Today, Fort Heiman is part of the Fort Donelson National Battlefield, which helps preserve important Civil War history.
