The County Seat Competition
Back in 1889, the first courthouse in Toledo burned down. This meant a new county seat needed to be chosen for Cleveland County. New Edinburg was one of the towns hoping to become the new county seat. Other towns in the running were Rison, Kingsland, and Beasley's Switch.
None of the towns got enough votes in the first election. So, a second election was held. In the end, Rison won the vote and became the county seat. It has remained the county seat ever since.
