New Fairfield is a small, unincorporated community located in Fairfield Township, within Franklin County, Indiana. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live together, but it doesn't have its own official town government like a city or village.
History of New Fairfield
The story of New Fairfield is quite interesting because it actually replaced an older town! The original town, known as "Old" Fairfield, was first planned out in 1815. This process of planning a town and marking out its streets and lots is called platting.
However, in the 1970s, a big change happened. A large body of water called the Brookville Reservoir was created. This new reservoir was built by holding back water, and it was going to flood the area where Old Fairfield was located.
Because of this, the residents of Old Fairfield had to move. New Fairfield was then started on higher ground nearby. This allowed the community to continue even after their original home was covered by the new lake.
