A Look Back: New Fane's History
New Fane has an interesting past, starting with its first settlers.
Early Settlers and Names
The very first person to settle in this area was Andrew Eble. He arrived in 1855, coming all the way from Milwaukee. Andrew Eble built a sawmill on the East Branch of the Milwaukee River. Because of him, the community was first known as Ebleville. Sadly, Andrew Eble died in an accidental shooting in 1859.
Around the same time, another group of people settled nearby. They came from a place called Newfane, New York. In 1852, they were given permission to open a post office. Then, in 1875, this New Fane post office was moved to Ebleville. From that moment on, the whole area became known as New Fane. The post office eventually closed down in 1909.
Churches and Community Life
Religion was an important part of early community life in New Fane. In 1859, the first Lutheran church services were held here. A church group, or congregation, officially formed in 1861.
The community built St. Johannes Church in 1871. They used stones they found right in the area to construct it. Later, the church's name was changed to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Today, St. John Lutheran Church is still a part of New Fane. Another church, St. Matthias Mission, is also located close to New Fane.
The River and Its Fish
For many years, there was a dam on the Milwaukee River in New Fane. However, this dam was removed in 2001. Removing the dam was a big change for the river. Experts believe it helped create new places for fish to live. One type of fish that benefited greatly was the longear sunfish. This shows how changes to our environment can help nature thrive.
