New Goshen is a small community located in Vigo County, Indiana, in the United States. It is part of Fayette Township. New Goshen is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area the U.S. Census Bureau defines for collecting statistics, but it's not an officially incorporated town or city. New Goshen is also part of the larger Terre Haute metropolitan area.
A Look at New Goshen's Past
New Goshen was officially planned and marked out on May 17, 1853. Four men named Hamilton Smith, William Ferguson, George Smith, and John Hay helped create the town. By the year 1890, about 180 people lived there.
A person who would later become a U.S. Senator, Birch Bayh, once lived in New Goshen. He graduated from Fayette High School. This school closed in 1959. Its students then joined what is now West Vigo High School.
The post office in New Goshen has been open for a very long time, since 1851.
