History of the New Hall Inn
The building where the New Hall Inn stands was built around the year 1650. It is located on Lowside in Bowness.
Famous People and Changes
From 1852 to 1862, a famous wrestler named Thomas Longmire was the landlord of the inn. A landlord is the person who owns or manages a pub.
The New Hall Inn officially became a pub with a licence in 1866. Later, in 1880, a company called John Booth of the Old Brewery bought the pub. They made many changes to the building.
Where Did the Name "Hole in t'Wall" Come From?
By 1890, the New Hall Inn was one of the biggest pubs in Bowness. People started calling it the "Hole in the Wall," or "Hole in t'Wall" in the local way of speaking (dialect). No one is completely sure why it got this name. One idea is that there might have been a real hole in the wall. Through this hole, drinks could be passed to the nearby blacksmiths (who work with metal) and ostlers (who look after horses).
A Pub for Everyone
By 1907, the New Hall Inn was the oldest licensed pub in Bowness. It was especially popular with working-class people, like boatmen who worked on the lake.
In 1931, someone wrote about the pub. They said it was a place where people could play games like dominoes and darts. It also served a type of beer called mild beer.
Protecting History
Because the building is so old and important, it was officially made a Grade II listed building in 1973. This helps protect it for the future. In 1982, a company called Robinsons Brewery bought the pub.
