New Haven is a small bay or inlet located in the Falkland Islands. It is found on the western side of East Falkland. This area faces Falkland Sound, which is a stretch of water. Falkland Sound separates East Falkland from West Falkland.
New Haven is also home to a group of gentoo penguins. These penguins are known for the white stripe across their heads.
Ferry Service
New Haven is important because it is where a new ferry service begins. This ferry connects the two main islands of the Falklands. It helps people and goods travel between East and West Falkland.
Modern Ferry Terminal
A special ferry terminal was built at New Haven. This terminal is designed for "roll-on/roll-off" ferries. This means vehicles like trucks and cars can drive directly onto and off the ferry.
The terminal cost about £1.5 million to build. This was the biggest project ever done by the Falkland Islands Government's Public Works Department. This department helps build and maintain important public structures.
Construction of the terminal took 12 months. It officially opened in November 2008.
The MV Concordia Bay
The ferry that uses this route is called the MV Concordia Bay. It is based at New Haven. The MV Concordia Bay started its regular trips in July 2008.
It travels from New Haven to Port Howard on West Falkland. The ferry carries trucks, cars, and people. Workboat Services Ltd. owns and operates this ferry.
