History of New Haven
New Haven was first settled around 1883. Before that, a general store had been open in the area since 1878. This store likely served as a central spot for people living nearby.
The number of people living in New Haven changed over the years. In 1902, only 19 people lived there. By 1925, the population grew slightly to 27. The community saw its biggest growth by 1940, when its population reached 150 people. After that, the population started to decrease.
Geography and Location
New Haven is located in the southeastern part of Mitchell County, Iowa. It is about 9 miles (14 km) east of Osage, Iowa, which is the county seat. The county seat is where the main government offices for the county are located. Osage also has the post office that serves New Haven.
Iowa Highway 9 runs along the western edge of the community. This highway connects New Haven to Osage in the west. It also leads northeast about 10 miles (16 km) to another town called Riceville.
Land and Water Features
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the New Haven census-designated place covers an area of 1.93 square miles (4.99 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large bodies of water within the CDP boundaries.
