A Look Back in Time

The history of New Market began in 1744. A person named David Priest received a large piece of land, about 400 acres. In 1756, this land was sold to the Willis family.

Later, in 1807, two people named Henry Mosser and William Culbertson planned out the village. They divided it into 120 smaller pieces of land, called lots.

For many years, New Market was important for river travel. A ferry boat operated here from 1740 until about 1820. This ferry was first owned by John Harris Jr.. It helped people cross the Susquehanna River. Over time, different owners ran the ferry, and eventually the state of Pennsylvania took over.
