New Paris is a small community located in Elkhart County, Indiana, in the United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for collecting statistics. In 2020, about 1,587 people lived there.

A Look Back in Time

New Paris was founded in 1839 by settlers who came from Preble County, Ohio. It is believed that they named their new community after New Paris, Ohio. By the 1890s, New Paris had become an important place for shipping goods. This was because two different railroads met there.

Schools in New Paris

New Paris Elementary School was built in 1920. When it first opened, it taught students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.

Fairfield Junior-Senior High School

In 1968, Fairfield Junior-Senior High School was created. This school became the place where students from New Paris and Millersburg Elementary School went after elementary school.

New Elementary Schools

In 1999, a new elementary school called Benton Elementary School opened. It was built to serve the students in the countryside areas around New Paris and Millersburg. Because of Benton Elementary, the number of students at New Paris Elementary School went down for a while. However, over time, the number of students returned to its usual level. In 2004, construction started on another new elementary school. This one was built in a more rural part of New Paris.

Sunnyside Park

Sunnyside Park is a nice place for outdoor activities. It has a pond where you can go fishing, though it doesn't have a lot of fish. There is also a park building nearby and several memorials dedicated to veterans. The park also features a playground for kids and an outdoor pavilion.

Park Improvements

In 2007, the park building was updated and improved. Also, one of the two parking lots at the park was paved, making it easier for visitors to park. The Lion's Club building, which can be rented, is also located on the Sunnyside property.

Local News

The Farmer's Exchange is a weekly newspaper that is based in New Paris. It was started in 1926. This newspaper shares news and information for people living in northern Indiana and southern Michigan.
