New Rochelle Harbor is a special place where the land meets the sea! It's a natural harbor located in the city of New Rochelle, in Westchester County, New York. This harbor is part of the larger Long Island Sound, which is a big body of water.

A piece of land called Davenport Neck divides New Rochelle's waterfront into two main areas. The western part is known as New Rochelle Harbor. The eastern part is called Echo Bay.

Exploring the Harbor

The upper part of New Rochelle Harbor is known as "New Rochelle Creek." This creek stretches north for about a mile from the main entrance of the harbor. At its very end, you'll find Titus Mill-Pond.

The "Lower Harbor" is a long, narrow waterway. It flows between three islands: Travers Island, Neptune Island, and Glen Island. The entire harbor is safe from big waves and storms. This protection comes from Davenport Neck and the islands of Glen Island and Hunters Island.

Boating Fun

The Lower Harbor area is a very busy spot for boats! Many people enjoy boating here. It's home to the boat mooring areas of the New York Athletic Club on Travers Island. You'll also find the Huguenot Yacht Club and boatyards on Neptune Island.

If you want to launch your own boat, there are two boat ramps. These ramps are located at Glen Island Park. The inner part of the harbor is not used by many boats. This is because most of its waters are not deep enough for larger vessels.

Getting Around the Harbor

New Rochelle Harbor is about 6,500 feet long. That's more than a mile! It's also about 500 to 600 feet wide. The main way to enter the harbor is through a channel between Davenport Neck and Glen Island.

To get into the Lower Harbor from this entrance, boats must pass under a special bridge. This bridge connects Glen Island to the mainland. Every time a boat needs to pass, the bridge has to open. This means someone needs to be there to operate the bridge all day and night!

There are other channels too. One channel is between Glen Island and Hunters Island. Other channels exist between the islands that protect the harbor from storms. For example, one channel is between Glen Island and Goose Island. Another is between Davids Island and Goose Island. Be careful though, the waters around these islands and in the entrance channels have many rocks.

What You'll Find Along the Shore

The shoreline of New Rochelle Harbor is a mix of different activities. You'll see places for fun and recreation. There are also businesses that work with boats. Plus, there are many homes, from medium to tall buildings.

Recreational spots are mostly found in the Lower Harbor. These include Glen Island County Park and the Glen Island Yacht Club. You'll also find the New York Athletic Club Yacht Club and the Huguenot Yacht Club. More marinas are located along the shoreline. Businesses and homes are mostly found along Pelham Road in the upper harbor area.
