The Story of New Rochester
How New Rochester Began
New Rochester wasn't always called New Rochester! When it was first started, its name was Freedom. This area was officially mapped out and divided into lots in the year 1835. When land is platted, it means someone draws a map showing how the land is divided into streets, blocks, and individual pieces for building.
Changing Names and Post Office Days
A few years later, in 1837, a post office was opened in the community. This post office was given the name New Rochester. It helped people send and receive letters and packages for many years. The post office stayed open until 1903. People think the name "New Rochester" might have come from another place called East Rochester, Ohio. An early settler, which is someone who moves to and helps start a new community, might have come from there.
