New Salem is a small place located in the state of Indiana in the United States. It is an "unincorporated community" within Noble Township, which is part of Rush County. An unincorporated community is a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the larger county or township.
History of New Salem
New Salem was officially planned and laid out in the year 1831. When a place is "platted", it means someone drew up a map showing where streets, lots, and public areas would be. This helps organize how the community will grow.
In the same year, 1831, a post office was opened in New Salem. Post offices were very important back then for sending and receiving letters and packages. This post office served the community for many years until it closed down in 1943.
