New Salem-Buffington was a special kind of community in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it was an area identified by the government for counting people, even though it wasn't an official town or city.

New Salem-Buffington was part of the larger Pittsburgh Metro Area. In the year 2000, about 808 people lived there. Later, for the 2010 census, this single area was divided into two separate CDPs: New Salem and Buffington. Both of these communities are found within Menallen Township.

  • Ernie Davis was born in New Salem on December 14, 1939. He later moved to Uniontown and then to Elmira, New York. Ernie Davis was a talented football player who made history as the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy. This award is given to the most outstanding player in college football.
  • Robert J. Cenker was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, on November 5, 1948. He lived in the Buffington/New Salem area until 1973. Robert Cenker became an engineer and later flew into space! He was a payload specialist for RCA and was part of the crew on the Space Shuttle Columbia mission 61-C. This space flight took place from January 12 to January 18, 1986.
