New South Wales Aborigines Protection Association facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The New South Wales Aborigines Protection Association was a private group in New South Wales, Australia. It worked to support Aboriginal Australians during the late 1800s. This association helped manage several important places called mission stations. These included Maloga Mission, Cumeroogunga, Warangesda, and Brewarrina.

What Was the Aborigines Protection Association?

The New South Wales Aborigines Protection Association was a non-government organisation. Its main goal was to improve the lives of Aboriginal people in the colony. It aimed to help the remaining Aboriginal tribes in New South Wales.

How the Association Started

The idea for the Association began in 1878. It grew from a group called the Committee to Aid the Maloga Mission. This committee was started by Daniel Matthews, who founded the Maloga Mission. In 1880, the New South Wales Aborigines Protection Association was officially formed. Its purpose was to "ameliorate the present deplorable condition of the remnants of the Aborigine tribes of this colony." This means they wanted to make things better for Aboriginal people.

Working with the Government

In 1883, the New South Wales Government created its own group. This was called the Board for the Protection of Aborigines. The Board started to give money to the three mission stations that the Association managed. However, the Association continued to run these stations.

By 1892, the Association's money started to run out. Because of this, they handed over the management of the mission stations to the government's Board. The Association continued its work until at least 1895. By then, they also helped oversee the La Perouse Mission.
