History of New Suffolk
New Suffolk has a special place in United States history. It was once home to the first submarine base in the country!
First Submarine Base
Between 1899 and 1905, the USS Holland (SS-1) was based here. This was the very first submarine to be officially used by the U.S. Navy. Five other submarines, similar to the Holland and designed by the Holland Torpedo Boat Company, were also based in New Suffolk.
This important base was located on 1st Street, between Main and King Streets. The company that built these submarines later changed its name to Electric Boat. Because of this, New Suffolk proudly calls itself the "First Submarine Base" in the United States.
Local School History
For many years, New Suffolk had a very small, two-room school house. In 2007, only nine students from kindergarten to sixth grade attended. This made it one of the smallest school districts in New York State.
However, the school building closed after the 2023-2024 school year. This happened because there weren't enough students attending. Now, students from New Suffolk will go to school in the neighboring Southold school district.
