New Wilmington is a small town, called a borough, located in northern Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It was first planned out in 1824 and officially became a borough on April 9, 1863. In 2020, about 2,097 people lived there. New Wilmington is special because it's home to Westminster College. It also serves as a center for the Old Order Amish community living in the nearby Wilmington Township. This borough is part of the larger Pittsburgh metropolitan area.

History of New Wilmington

The town of New Wilmington began around 1797 or 1798. The first house was built in 1824, and soon more buildings followed. In 1847, an Amish community settled between New Wilmington and Volant.

New Wilmington became a "half-borough" on April 4, 1863. It then became a full borough on April 9, 1873. In 1874, about 500 people lived there. By the year 2000, the population had grown to 2,452. This number included 1,315 local residents and 1,137 college students.

In 1999, a book was written about the full history of New Wilmington. You can find this book at the Westminster College Library. It has 12 chapters of history, starting from 1797, and includes over 100 photographs.

In 2014, community members, led by Mayor Sherie Babb, created the New Wilmington Economic Development Committee. This group works to improve the town's economy and other areas.

In January 2016, a project called LIVE New Wilmington was launched. This project aims to connect and celebrate the community. It highlights New Wilmington as a place for artists, good education, beautiful nature, and caring neighbors. The group focuses on arts, education, environment, and people to help the town grow.
