The New York State Women Veterans Memorial is a special monument located on Madison Avenue in Albany, New York. It was created to honor and remember the important role women have played in military service for their country.

Its History
The idea for the memorial began to take shape in 1998. A special ceremony to start building it, called a ground-breaking ceremony, happened in June 1998. The governor of New York at the time, George Pataki, led this event. A governor is the elected leader of a state.
Just a few months later, in December of the same year, the memorial was officially shown to the public for the first time. This event is called an unveiling.
What It Looks Like
The memorial is made up of three large panels. Each panel has a special kind of sculpture called a bas-relief. This means the sculpture is carved into the surface but still sticks out a little, like a raised picture. The materials used are bronze and granite.
The middle panel shows a figure named Liberty. Liberty is a symbol of freedom. She is holding the New York state flag high in her right hand. The other two panels show pictures of women veterans from different times in history. This helps us see how women have served in many wars and conflicts.
There is also a message carved into the memorial. It says: "Dedicated to the Women of New York State for their War Time Military Service in the Defense of this Nation. " This message clearly states the purpose of the monument: to honor New York women who served in the military during wartime.
