Newald (also known as Ross) is a small community in Forest County, Wisconsin, in the United States. It's considered an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of a larger area called the town of Ross.

Newald is also a census-designated place, or CDP. This means the United States Census Bureau has defined it as a specific area for counting people. It helps them collect information about where people live.

You can find Newald about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Crandon. According to the 2020 census, about 70 people live there.

History of Newald

Newald has an interesting past! It was first known as Ross, named after Charles Ross, who was one of the first settlers in the area. The community was officially mapped out, or "platted," under the name Ross in 1905.

How Newald Got Its Name

Just one year later, in 1906, the community's name was changed to Newald. This was done to honor a local landowner named Leopold J. Newald.

Early Development

In 1905, a post office was opened in Newald, making it easier for people to send and receive mail. This post office served the community for many years until it closed down in 1985.

Records from January 1905 show that building materials and supplies were sent to the new town of Newald. It was planned to be a busy place, with a hotel, a store, a mill, a blacksmith shop, and even a saloon. These plans show that people had high hopes for Newald to become an important center in the northern part of Wisconsin.

Population Changes

The number of people living in Newald has changed over the years. This information is collected during the United States Census, which happens every ten years.

  • In 2010, the population of Newald was 95 people.
  • By 2020, the population had decreased slightly to 70 people.
