Newbern is a small, unincorporated town located in Bartholomew County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. Being "unincorporated" means it's not officially a city or a village with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Clifty Township.
Newbern's History
Newbern has a long history, even though it's a small place today. A post office was first opened in Newbern way back in 1833. This was a very important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years until it closed down in 1901.
The town of Newbern got its name from another place: New Bern, North Carolina. An early settler who moved to this area in Indiana came from New Bern, North Carolina, and decided to name the new settlement after their original home.
