Newbern is a small, historic place in Pulaski County, Virginia, in the U.S. state of Virginia. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a town that doesn't have its own local government like a city or a village. Instead, it's governed by the county.
From 1839 until 1892, Newbern was the main town where the county government was located. This is called the county seat. The county's main building, the courthouse, burned down in 1892.
Why is it called Newbern?
Many of the first people who settled here came from Switzerland. Because of this, they chose the name Newbern. It was named after Bern, a famous city in Switzerland.
The Newbern Historic District is a special area in the town. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This means it's recognized for its important history and old buildings.
Newbern's Early Days
The town of Newbern began in 1810. A man named Adam Hance started it. His land, about 1,400 acres, was right on the Wilderness Road. This road was also known as the "Great Road."
The location was perfect because it was about halfway between two other towns: Christiansburg, Virginia and Wytheville, Virginia. Adam Hance's old home is still standing in the Newbern Historic District today.
Newbern's Climate
The weather in Newbern is generally mild. There isn't a huge difference between the highest and lowest temperatures. The area also gets a good amount of rain all year long. According to a system that classifies climates, Newbern has a marine west coast climate. This means it has cool summers and mild winters.
