Newcomb's Ranch is a famous spot high up in the Angeles National Forest in California. It's like a special roadside stop, often called a "roadhouse." It sits at about 5,340 feet (1,628 meters) above sea level. This place is super popular, especially with people who ride motorcycles. It's the only private property along the long and winding Angeles Crest Highway.

A Look Back in Time

The Newcomb family first settled this land. They built the original roadhouse in 1939. For many years, Newcomb's Ranch was more than just a restaurant. It also served as a hotel, a general store, and even a gas station.

Sadly, the inn caught fire in 1976. The fire badly damaged the second floor. This part of the building was never rebuilt.

In late 2001, a doctor named Frederick Rundall bought the ranch. He bought it from Lynn Newcomb. In 2003, he spent about $340,000 to remodel the place. The second floor, which was damaged, became living space for employees.

Why Motorcyclists Love It

Newcomb's Ranch is known as a favorite spot for motorcyclists. Los Angeles Magazine calls it "the informal headquarters for riders." Motorcyclist magazine also described it as "one of Southern California's most famous Rickey Racer Roadhouses." Many riders stop here to take a break. They can grab a meal, chat with friends, and enjoy the mountain views.

Even famous people visit Newcomb's Ranch. Comedian and motorcycle enthusiast Jay Leno is a frequent visitor.

Challenges and Closures

Newcomb's Ranch has faced some tough times. In 2009, it had to close because of the huge Station Fire. This fire affected a large part of the Angeles National Forest.

In January 2010, the Angeles Crest Highway closed due to storms. This made it hard for people to reach the ranch. Also, the ranch had a problem with a permit for its diesel generator. Because of these issues, the owner, Frederick Rundall, thought about closing the ranch completely. However, it remains a popular destination today.
