Newell was named after the family of W. P. Newell. He was an important person in the area's early history.
W. P. Newell's Public Service
W. P. Newell held several important jobs in the community and state:
- In 1845, he was chosen to be the sheriff of Randolph County. A sheriff is like the main police officer for a county, responsible for keeping the peace and enforcing laws.
- From 1853 to 1855, W. P. Newell was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives. This is a group of people who make laws for the entire state of Alabama. They are like lawmakers for the state.

Newell's Post Office
Newell had its own post office, which was a big deal for the community.
- The post office opened in 1887. This meant people in Newell could send and receive mail right there, making communication easier.
- The post office served the community for many years, but it eventually closed on October 5, 2002.
