Newham North West was a special area in the London Borough of Newham in the United Kingdom. History of the Constituency
This special area, Newham North West, was first created for an election in February 1974. It was used for elections until 1997. After that, it was combined with part of another area called Newham South. Together, they formed a new area known as West Ham. Elections in the 1970s
In the February 1974 election, Arthur Lewis from the Labour Party won with 59.9% of the votes. He was chosen as the first MP for this new area.
Later that year, in October 1974, Arthur Lewis was elected again. He got even more votes, with 66.6% of people choosing him.
In the 1979 election, Arthur Lewis won for a third time. He received 61.5% of the votes.
Elections in the 1980s
In the 1983 election, a new MP was chosen for Newham North West. Tony Banks from the Labour Party won this election with 46.6% of the votes. Arthur Lewis also ran in this election, but as an Independent Labour candidate, and Tony Banks won.
Tony Banks was re-elected in the 1987 election. He got 55.4% of the votes, showing strong support from the area.
Elections in the 1990s
Tony Banks won again in the 1992 election. He received 61.1% of the votes. This was the last election for Newham North West before the area was changed in 1997.
