Newland is a town in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. It is the main town and county seat of Avery County. In 2020, about 715 people lived there. Newland is special because it is the highest county seat located east of the Mississippi River. This means it's at a very high elevation compared to other county seats in the eastern U.S.

History of Newland

Before Newland became a town, the area was known as "Old Fields of Toe". This name came from a long time ago. It was a place where soldiers would gather before important battles, like the one against Native Americans or the Battle of Kings Mountain. On November 9, 1783, a man named Colonel Waightstill Avery was given this land.

The Legend of Estatoe

The name "Toe" in "Old Fields of Toe" comes from a legend about a Native American chief's daughter named Estatoe. The story says she fell in love with a warrior from a different, rival tribe. Because their families would not accept their love, they bravely jumped from a high cliff into a nearby river.

Another version of the legend says their love caused a big war between the tribes. To bring peace, Estatoe created a special peace pipe with two stems. Both chiefs could smoke from it at the same time. The chiefs and their followers met by the river. They smoked the pipe until peace was made, and Estatoe was able to marry her love.

Town's Founding and Growth

In 1899, a railway called the Linville River Railway (LRR) started service in the area. It had a stop at "Old Fields." In 1911, when Avery County was created, "Old Fields of Toe" was chosen as the place for the county's main government offices, known as the county seat. The area was then renamed Newland. It was named after William C. Newland, who was the Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina at the time.

The Newland Post Office opened in 1912. In 1913, the Avery County Courthouse and Avery County Jail opened. These buildings are now listed in the National Register of Historic Places because of their importance. Also in 1913, Newland officially became an incorporated town. In 1914, the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad (ET&WNC), which took over from the LRR, opened the Newland Depot. This depot had telephone and telegraph services. It burned down in 1921 but was quickly rebuilt. The train station continued to operate until 1940.
