Newman Springs (also known as Soap Creek Springs) is a special place with natural springs in Lake County, California. Long ago, people even built a resort there.

Where are Newman Springs?

Newman Springs are located in Lake County. They are about 15 miles (24 km) north of Clearlake Oaks. The springs are also about 45 miles (72 km) west of Williams.

The springs sit at an elevation of 2,159 feet (658 meters) above sea level. They are found along a stream called Soap Creek. This creek got its name because the spring water contains a mineral called borax, which can feel a bit like soap.

What are the Springs Like?

Newman Springs are natural springs that release warm water. They are sometimes called Soap Creek Springs because they are right along Soap Creek.

The main spring is the largest. It flows out of the ground near the creek. The water from this spring is warm, about 86°F (30°C), and it has a bit of iron in it. People used to direct this water into a small bathhouse.

Further upstream, there's another special spot called the Borax Pool. This pool also has warm, cloudy water. People believed this water was very good for bathing. There are several other smaller springs in the area too, with temperatures ranging from 72°F to 92°F (22°C to 33°C).

A Historic Resort at the Springs

For a time, Newman Springs was a popular bathing resort. People came to enjoy the warm, mineral-rich waters. The resort had a swimming pool with walls built around it.

In 1914, a man named Geo. Young owned the springs. He leased the resort to W. W. Tallman, who managed the place. The resort was well-known locally as "Soap Creek" because of the borax in the water.
