Newport Market is a traditional indoor market in Newport, South Wales. It's a special building from the Victorian times. It's known for its large cast iron frame and a cool glass roof shaped like a barrel.

You can easily get to the market! The Newport bus station is right outside one of its main entrances. The Newport railway station is also just a short walk away.

There have been plans to update the market since 2012.

The Market's History

A market building first stood at the High Street end of this spot around 1817. But it soon became too small! So, in 1865, it was made bigger and then completely rebuilt.

In 1885, the Newport Corporation (like the city council today) bought the land. They then built the market you see now. The foundations for the office buildings and the tower were started on September 13, 1887. The market was officially opened on May 1, 1889, by Henry Faulkner, who was the Mayor of Newport at the time.

The High Street side of the market was changed and rebuilt again in 1934. This part included an entrance to the market, shops, and a department store called Hills & Steele.

An extension at the High Street end was opened on November 25, 1987. This was done by Mayor Robert Frank Allen. The market is a Grade II-Listed building, which means it's an important historical building. It's located right in the city centre. The Newport City Council owns and runs the market.
