About Newport Stadium
The Newport City Council owns and manages Newport Stadium. It is part of a bigger sports area. This area is called the Newport International Sports Village. The famous Wales National Velodrome is also located there.
Stadium Upgrades and Capacity
The stadium was improved for football matches. It met the standards for the Conference National league. Before 2012, it could hold 5,058 fans. In 2012, Newport County moved to Rodney Parade.
Newport Stadium is also great for athletics. It can host international track and field events. It is a Class 1 standard stadium. The stadium's bright floodlights can reach 500 Lux. This makes night games easy to see.
Newport RFC's Home Ground
In October 2021, Newport RFC started playing their home rugby matches at Newport Stadium. They had previously played at Rodney Parade. They still play two matches per season at Rodney Parade.
Stadium Layout
The stadium has two main covered stands. These stands run along the sides of the pitch. The west stand has seats for 1,100 people. The east stand is a covered standing area. It can hold 1,600 fans. People often call this stand The Shed. There is also an uncovered standing area at the north end.
You can reach the stadium from Spytty Road. There is a large car park for visitors.
Temporary Seating for Big Games
Sometimes, extra seats are added for special matches. For example, when Newport County played Blackpool in the 2001–02 FA Cup, a temporary stand was put up. It was behind the goal at the north end.
Another temporary stand was added for a 2006–07 FA Cup match. This was when Newport County played Swansea City. It was placed behind the goal at the south end.
In 2011, more temporary stands were added. These were all-seated and uncovered. One stand with 949 seats was at the south end. Another with 1,197 seats was in front of the north terrace. These additions brought the stadium's total capacity to 5,058. Of these, 3,246 were seated.
