The Newton Wonder apple is a special kind of apple. It is also known as Newton's Wonder or Newton's Apple. This apple is usually eaten after it has been cooked. This is because it can be quite sour when raw. It tastes a bit like the Bramley apple, but it is slightly sweeter. People often use Newton Wonder apples to make pies or fruit preserves.
The Story of the Newton Wonder Apple
The Newton Wonder apple tree was first discovered in a very unusual place. It was found growing as a tiny seedling in the roof-gutter of the Hardinge Arms pub. This pub is located in King's Newton, Derbyshire, England.
William Taylor was the landlord of the pub at that time. He carefully planted the small apple tree in the pub's garden. The very first Newton Wonder apples grew from this tree. Experts believe this apple is a mix of the Blenheim Orange and the Dumelow's Seedling apple varieties. In 1915, the Newton Wonder was even crossed with the Blenheim Orange to create a new apple called the Howgate Wonder. The Royal Horticultural Society gave the Newton Wonder a special award in 1887. This award was called a First Class Certificate.
About the Newton Wonder Tree
The Newton Wonder apple tree grows best in places that are mild and wet. Its fruit is usually red and green on the outside. Inside, the apple has creamy-colored flesh. These apples tend to grow very large.
The tree flowers later in the season than many other apple trees. It produces a large amount of fruit. You should pick these apples late in the growing season. The Newton Wonder tree is also good at fighting off common fruit tree diseases. This makes it quite easy to grow and get a good harvest. In 1993, the tree received another award. It was given the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Cooking with Newton Wonder Apples
Newton Wonder apples are excellent for cooking. They are also good for making juice. When you cook these apples, they turn into a smooth puree. This puree can be used in many tasty dishes. You can add it to pies or tarts. It also makes a great chutney.
When cooked, the apple has a sharp but slightly sweet taste. It tastes best when the apples are fully ripe, which happens late in the season. You can store the harvested apples for at least three months. They will still keep their great flavor.
