Newville's Early Days
Newville has a long history. It was first settled way back in 1854 by a person named J. M. Kendrick. In its early years, Newville was a busy little community. It even had its own post office, which helped people send and receive letters and packages. The post office was open for many years, from 1868 until 1918.
What Newville Used to Be Like
Back in the day, Newville was a lively place with several important businesses. Imagine a small town with a service station where people could get gas for their cars. There was also a hotel, which was a place for travelers to stay overnight. These businesses were important for the people living there and for anyone passing through.
The Big Fire of 1929
Sadly, a big fire changed Newville forever. On July 22, 1929, most of the town was destroyed by the flames. This was a huge loss for the community. Many of the buildings and businesses that made Newville special were gone.
Newville Becomes a Ghost Town
After the fire, Newville never fully recovered. The last of its original buildings were taken down in 1932. By 1936, people started calling Newville a "ghost town." This term is used for towns that have lost most of their residents and businesses. Even though it's mostly empty now, the name "Newville" still appears on road signs in the area.
The Newville Cemetery Today
One important part of Newville that is still active today is the Newville Cemetery. This cemetery is a place where people from the community have been buried for many years. It continues to be used, showing a lasting connection to the past residents of Newville.
