Ngiṉṯaka (pronounced "ngin-TAH-ka") is a special giant lizard from the stories of the Aṉangu and Pitjantjatjara people in Australia. These people have a rich culture and history. Ngiṉṯaka is an important Ancestral Being, which means a powerful spirit or ancestor who helped create the world. He is often linked to a place called Angatja, which is part of a very important traditional songline.

Ngiṉṯaka is one of two main reptile Ancestral Beings connected to Uluru, a famous large rock formation. The other one is Milpali.

The Story of Ngiṉṯaka

The journey of Ngiṉṯaka is told through a special traditional songline called Inma Ngiṉṯaka. This songline describes his travels over more than 500 kilometers. Each part of the song follows his path across the land.

In these ancient stories, Ngiṉṯaka is shown with human-like qualities. He acts and thinks in ways that people can understand.

Ngiṉṯaka's Big Journey

The myth tells us that Ngiṉṯaka started his journey from his home. This home was located near the border of Western Australia. He traveled a long way to find a better grindstone. He was looking for one at the camp of another lizard tribe, close to Oodnadatta.

Ngiṉṯaka took the grindstone from the Aṉangu people. He then carried it back towards his home. The Aṉangu people chased after him as he went.

How Ngiṉṯaka Shaped the Land

As Ngiṉṯaka traveled, he created many landforms. In one part of his journey, he dug up tjanmatjas, which are bush onions. This digging created large boulders that we can still see today.

He continued his journey, shaping the land as he went. He created many features in the Musgrave Ranges and Mann Ranges. As he moved, he also "vomited" up different kinds of grass seeds and plant foods. This act helped to spread plants across the land.

Ngiṉṯaka and the Mountains

According to the mythology, Ngarutjaranya is the highest mountain in South Australia. This mountain is actually Ngiṉṯaka himself. The story says he reared up to look over the country.

He was looking back towards his home in the west. This moment is captured in the shape of the mountain.
