Nguyễn Thiện Nhân (born 12 June 1953) is a well-known Vietnamese economist, engineer, and professor. He is also a respected politician. He has held many important roles in the Vietnamese government.
He was a member of the National Assembly for Ho Chi Minh City. From 2017 to 2020, he was the party secretary for the city. This role is like being the de facto (actual) mayor. He was also part of the Politburo. This is a very high-ranking group in the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Before these roles, he was the Chairman of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front. This was from 2013 to 2017. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister. At the same time, he was the Minister of Education. This was during Nguyễn Tấn Dũng's time as Prime Minister.
Before working in national politics, he was a systems engineer in the military. Later, he worked in universities. He then joined the city government of Ho Chi Minh City. He was the deputy mayor there from 2001 to 2006. He earned his Bachelor's and PhD degrees in Cybernetics from a university in East Germany.

Early Life and Education
Nguyễn Thiện Nhân was born on 12 June 1953. His birthplace was Cà Mau, Vietnam. His family originally came from Trà Vinh province. His father, Nguyễn Thiện Thành, was a professor and a doctor. His father was an educated person who helped with the Vietnamese independence movement.
In 1954, after the Geneva Accords, his family moved. They went to North Vietnam. This part of Vietnam was under the Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
Joining the Military and Studying Abroad
In June 1970, Nguyễn Thiện Nhân joined the People's Army of Vietnam. He became a cadet in engineering. This was after finishing high school. His father encouraged him to do this.
In 1972, he went to study in East Germany. He attended the Technical University of Magdeburg. In 1976, he became a Second Lieutenant.
Doctorate and Research
In 1979, he completed his PhD in Cybernetics. His research was about controlling heating systems automatically. After returning to Vietnam in 1980, he worked as a researcher. He was at the Controlled Arms Institute. This institute was part of the Ministry of Defense. He worked there until 1983.
In 1980, he joined the Communist Party of Vietnam. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1980. In 1982, he became a Senior Lieutenant.
Key Political Roles
Nguyễn Thiện Nhân is known for his efforts to improve Vietnam's education system. Many people in Vietnam supported these changes. He is also one of the top officials in the government who speaks English very well. He is fluent in both English and German.
Leading Ho Chi Minh City
On 10 May 2017, he became the Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam for Ho Chi Minh City. He took over from Đinh La Thăng. This role made him the main leader of the city.
On 17 October 2020, he retired from this position. Nguyễn Văn Nên was elected to replace him. Mr. Nguyễn Thiện Nhân continued to help guide the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee. He did this until the 13th National Party Congress in January 2021.
