Nicasius le Febure (born 1615, died 1669) was a very smart French chemist. He was also known as Nicolas le Febure or Nicasius le Fevre. He worked for both the French and English kings, which was a big deal back then!

Early Life and Education

Nicasius le Febure was born in a town called Sedan, Ardennes in France. He went to school at the Academy of Sedan there. This is where he learned a lot about science.

Working for Kings

Le Febure became a very important chemist. He taught chemistry at the Jardin des Plantes (King's Garden) in Paris. This was a famous place for learning. A famous writer named John Evelyn even attended his classes in 1647.

Later, in 1660, he moved to England. There, he became the Professor of Chemistry for Charles II of England. He was also made the "Apothecary in Ordinary" to the Royal Family. This meant he prepared medicines for the king and his family. He also managed the king's laboratory at St James's Palace in London.

Becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society

It is thought that Nicasius le Febure became an English citizen in 1662. In 1663, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This was a very special group of top scientists in England. It showed how respected he was for his work.

His Later Life and Passing

Nicasius le Febure passed away in London in the spring of 1669. He was living in an area called St. Martin-in-the-Fields. There is a special picture of him that was made from an engraving.

Books and Writings

Le Febure was not just a great chemist; he was also a clear and smart writer. He wrote several important books about chemistry:

  • Traité de la Chymie: A Compendious Body of Chymistry (1664). This book was translated into English. It taught people everything they needed to know about chemistry. It explained how to prepare things from animals, plants, and minerals.
  • Disputatio de Myrrhata Potione (1660). This was a discussion about a special drink.
  • A Discourse upon Sr. Walter Rawleigh’s Great Cordial (1664). This book was about a famous medicine made by Sir Walter Raleigh.
