Nicholas Clagett (born April 14, 1686 – died December 8, 1746) was an important English bishop. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church. He came from a family of church leaders.

A Life in the Church

Nicholas Clagett grew up in a family connected to the church in Bury St Edmunds, England. He went to Trinity College, Cambridge when he was 16 years old in 1702. He earned several degrees there, including a Bachelor of Arts in 1706 and a Doctor of Divinity in 1724.

He started his church career as an Archdeacon of Buckingham in 1722. An archdeacon helps a bishop manage a church area. Later, in 1724, he became the Dean of Rochester. A dean is the head of a cathedral.

In 1731, Nicholas Clagett was chosen to be the Bishop of St David's in Wales. He was allowed to keep his leadership roles in two other churches at the same time. In 1742, he became the Bishop of Exeter in England. He passed away on December 8, 1746, and was buried in St. Margaret's, Westminster.

His Writings

Nicholas Clagett published some of his writings during his life. These included a book called Articles of Enquiry for the Archdeaconry of Buckingham in 1732. He also published eleven sermons. Sermons are speeches given in church, usually about religious topics. One of his sermons was given to the House of Lords, which is part of the British Parliament.

His Family

Nicholas Clagett came from a family with many church leaders. His father was also named Nicholas Clagett the Younger, and he was a minister. His uncle was a preacher named William Clagett. Both his father and uncle were sons of another church leader, Nicholas Clagett the elder.
