Nicholas Andrew Cummings (born July 25, 1924 – died June 8, 2020) was an important American psychologist and writer. He spent his life helping people understand their minds and feelings better.

Learning and Education

Nicholas Cummings started his college journey at the University of California, Berkeley. There, he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. Psychology is the study of how people think, feel, and behave.

He continued his studies at Claremont Graduate University for his master's degree. Later, he went to Adelphi University to earn his doctorate in clinical psychology. This high degree made him an expert in helping people with their mental health.

A Career Helping Others

Dr. Cummings had a long and impactful career. From 1959 to 1979, he was the Chief of Mental Health at Kaiser Permanente. This is a large healthcare organization that helps many people.

He also helped start the California School of Professional Psychology in 1970. This school trains new psychologists. Dr. Cummings was very important in creating a special training program called the Psy.D. for clinical psychologists. This program helped more people become skilled in helping others.

In 1979, his fellow psychologists chose him to be the president of the American Psychological Association. This is a very important group for psychologists in America.

In 1994, Nicholas Cummings and his wife, Dorothy, started the Nicholas & Dorothy Cummings Foundation. This foundation works to make sure that people can get good mental health care as part of their regular doctor visits.

Later, they gave a large donation to the Archives of the History of American Psychology at the University of Akron. Because of their generosity, this place was renamed the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology.

In 2014, Dr. Cummings and his daughter, Janet L. Cummings, founded the Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies. This institute continues their work of training people to help others with their mental well-being.
