Sir Nicholas Pelham (1650 – 8 November 1739) was an important British politician. He was a member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country. He came from a well-known family in England.
Early Life and Education
Nicholas Pelham was born in 1650. His father was Sir Thomas Pelham, 2nd Baronet. Nicholas was the first son his father had with his third wife, Margaret.
Nicholas went to Christ Church, Oxford for his education. This was a famous college at Oxford University.
Political Career
Nicholas Pelham became a knight on April 20, 1661. Being knighted was a special honor given by the King. It meant he was recognized for his service.
He served in Parliament many times. Parliament is where elected people discuss and create laws. He represented different areas, including Seaford and Sussex. Later, he represented Lewes from 1702 to 1705.
Return to Parliament
In 1726, Nicholas Pelham's great-nephew, the Duke of Newcastle, helped him return to Parliament. This happened during a special election called a by-election in Lewes. It was needed because another great-nephew, Henry Pelham, had passed away.
However, Nicholas Pelham did not stay in Parliament for long. In the next general election in 1727, he stepped aside. He let Henry's brother, Thomas, take the seat instead.
Family Life
Sir Nicholas Pelham married Jane Huxley. She was the daughter of James Huxley of Dornford. Together, they had three children:
- Thomas Pelham (born around 1678, died 1759)
- James Pelham (born around 1683, died 1761)
- Margaret Pelham, who married Sir William Ashburnham, 2nd Baronet
Sir Nicholas Pelham lived to be quite old. He passed away in 1739.
