Who Was Sir Thomas Pelham?
Sir Thomas Pelham was born in September 1597. He was the son of Sir Thomas Pelham, 1st Baronet of Halland. His mother was Mary Walsingham. He was baptised in a place called East Hoathly on September 22, 1597.
Early Life and Family
When his father passed away on December 2, 1624, Thomas became the 2nd Baronet. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. Sir Thomas married three times during his life. His first wife was Mary Wilbraham. His second wife was Judith Shurley. His third wife was Margaret Vane.
Sir Thomas had several children. His oldest son, John, took over the Baronet title after him. He also had another son, Nicholas, and daughters named Judith, Anne, Jane, and Elizabeth.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Sir Thomas Pelham started his political career early. In 1621, he was chosen as a Member of Parliament (MP) for East Grinstead. He held this job until 1622.
Later, in 1624, he became an MP for Sussex. This was during the last years of King James I's rule. He was chosen again in 1625, when King Charles I first became king.
The English Civil War and Politics
In April 1640, Sir Thomas was again elected as an MP for Sussex. This Parliament was called the Short Parliament. He was re-elected in November 1640 for the Long Parliament.
During this time, England was heading towards a big conflict. Sir Thomas supported the Parliamentarians, also known as the Roundheads. They were against King Charles I. In 1648, he was removed from Parliament during an event called Pride's Purge. This was when some members were forced out.
Even after this, Sir Thomas continued his political work. In 1654, he was elected to Parliament again. This was for the First Protectorate Parliament. His son was also elected alongside him.
Later Life and Legacy
Sir Thomas Pelham passed away at the age of 57. He was buried in Laughton on August 28, 1654. His son, John, became the 3rd Baronet, continuing the family's legacy.
