College Career: How Nick Played in School
Nick Arbuckle played college football at two schools. First, he played at Los Angeles Pierce College. Then, he played for Georgia State.
Top Player at Georgia State
In 2015, while playing for Georgia State, Nick was a top player. He was named first-team All-Sunbelt Conference. This means he was one of the best players in his college league.
That same year, Nick set a record in the Sun Belt Conference. He threw for 4,368 passing yards. This was more than anyone else in the conference that year. He also set school records for completions (307) and touchdowns (28). A completion is when a quarterback throws the ball and a teammate catches it. A touchdown is worth points!
Nick also made history for Georgia State football in 2015. He was the first player from his school to be named the conference player of the year. This is a big award for a college athlete.
Professional Career: Playing in the CFL
After college, Nick Arbuckle was not chosen in the 2016 NFL draft. He did spend some time with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL. But he soon found his home in the CFL.

Calgary Stampeders: Starting His CFL Journey
Nick signed with the Calgary Stampeders in March 2017. He quickly became the team's backup quarterback. This meant he was ready to play if the main quarterback couldn't.
In 2018, Nick played a little bit. He completed 17 passes for 144 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for five touchdowns. These were often in short-yardage situations, meaning the team needed only a few yards to get a first down or score.
In 2019, Nick got a big chance. The main quarterback, Bo Levi Mitchell, got injured. Nick stepped in as the temporary starting quarterback. He led the Stampeders to a great 37-10 win against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Stampeders won four out of seven games with Nick as the starter. He finished the season with 2,103 passing yards and 11 touchdowns.
Ottawa Redblacks (First Time): A New Team
On January 3, 2020, Nick was traded to the Ottawa Redblacks. He signed a two-year contract with them. However, he was released by the Redblacks in January 2021. This happened after another experienced quarterback, Matt Nichols, joined the team.
Toronto Argonauts (First Time): A Brief Stop
On February 1, 2021, Nick signed with the Toronto Argonauts. He made his first start for them in August 2021. He threw for 310 yards and one touchdown in a win. Nick started three more games for the Argonauts. He won one of those games. Later, he was replaced by McLeod Bethel-Thompson as the starting quarterback.
Edmonton Elks: A Challenging Season
In October 2021, Nick was traded to the Edmonton Elks. He signed a contract extension with them for the 2022 season. The 2022 season was tough for Nick and the Elks. They lost their first three games. Nick was then replaced by other quarterbacks. He played in five games for the Elks. He threw for 892 yards, two touchdowns, and eight interceptions. An interception is when the other team catches your pass.
Ottawa Redblacks (Second Time): Back to Ottawa
On July 11, 2022, Nick was traded back to the Redblacks. He was brought in to compete for the starting job. The team's main quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli, was injured. Nick started the team's Week 12 game. He led the Redblacks to their second win of the season. He continued as the starter for most of the rest of the season. However, the team did not win many games.
In February 2023, Nick signed a new contract with Ottawa. He was expected to be the backup quarterback. But Masoli was still injured, so Nick started the first two games of the season. He was later replaced by another player. Nick became a free agent in February 2024. This means he was able to sign with any team.
Toronto Argonauts (Second Time): Grey Cup Champion!
After being a free agent for a few months, Nick thought about retiring. But on May 19, 2024, he signed with the Toronto Argonauts again. This happened because their starting quarterback, Chad Kelly, was suspended.
Nick started the 2024 season as the backup. In a game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, he came in during the fourth quarter. He threw for 118 yards and one touchdown. In the next game, he came in early and helped the Argonauts win in overtime.
In Week 10, Nick was named the starter because another player was injured. He led the team to a 39-25 victory. Later, Chad Kelly returned from his suspension. Nick still stayed with the team as a backup.
In the playoffs, Nick became a hero. In the East Final game, Chad Kelly got a serious leg injury. Nick came into the game and helped the Argonauts win 30-28. This meant they were going to the Grey Cup!
Nick was named the starting quarterback for the 111th Grey Cup game. He played an amazing game. He completed 26 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. The Argonauts won the Grey Cup 41-24 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. For his great performance, Nick Arbuckle was named the Grey Cup Most Valuable Player. This was a huge achievement!
