Nicolás Díaz Sánchez was born in the city of Rancagua, Chile, on August 10, 1929. He went to school at the O'Higgins Institute of Rancagua. Later, he studied medicine at the University of Chile. He became a surgeon in 1955, which means he was a doctor who performed operations.
Starting in Politics
Díaz Sánchez began his political journey by helping Eduardo Frei Montalva in the 1958 presidential election. He then joined the Christian Democrat Party of Chile. In 1963, he was chosen to be the mayor of Rancagua. A mayor is the leader of a city. He stepped down the next year. He was elected mayor again in 1967 but resigned in 1968.
In 1970, President Salvador Allende chose him to be the Intendent of the O'Higgins Region. An Intendent is like a regional governor.
Serving His Country
During the time of military rule in Chile, Nicolás Díaz Sánchez worked within his political party. He also took part in the "No" movement. This movement was a group of people who voted "No" in a special election in 1988. Their vote helped bring back democracy to Chile.
After this, he was elected as a Senator of Chile. A senator is a high-ranking politician who helps make laws for the country. He represented the O'Higgins Region from 1990 to 1998. Later, from 2004 to 2008, he served as a councillor for Rancagua. A councillor helps make decisions for the local government.
