Early Life and Education
Nicolás Eyzaguirre went to a special private school called Colegio Verbo Divino. He loved music from a young age. When he was 15, he started studying classical guitar at the University of Chile Conservatory. He was inspired by the Nueva canción movement, which was a popular folk music style.
With his brother, Joaquín, he was part of a folk music group called Aquelarre. They played songs like El cautivo de Tiltil and Valparaíso.
Eyzaguirre first became involved in politics with the Christian Democrat Party. He later joined other political groups before going to the United States. He studied at the University of Chile, where he earned a degree in Commercial Engineering with a focus on economics. He also got a master's degree in economics, specializing in how countries develop their economies.
Career Journey
Becoming an Economist
After his studies in Chile, Eyzaguirre traveled to the United States. He went to Harvard University to study for a doctorate in macroeconomics and international trade. Macroeconomics looks at the economy of a whole country, while international trade deals with buying and selling goods between countries. He didn't finish his doctorate, but his time at Harvard changed his ideas about economics. He later said that he realized free market ideas were more practical.
When he returned to Chile, Eyzaguirre met and became friends with Ricardo Lagos. He later joined the Party for Democracy, which is still his political party today.
From 1984 to 1985, he worked as an adviser for the International Monetary Fund. This organization helps countries with their money problems. Then, from 1985 to 1990, he was an expert in money and finance for Latin America at CEPAL, a United Nations group that helps with economic development. After Chile became a democracy again, he held important jobs at the Central Bank of Chile from 1990 to 1997. He was the Director of Research and the Chief Economist there.
Serving as a Minister
On 11 March 2000, Nicolás Eyzaguirre became the Minister of Finance in the government led by President Ricardo Lagos. As Minister of Finance, his job was to manage Chile's money and economy. The government wanted to make Chile's free market economy even better. They worked to balance the country's budget and created a special rule to keep the government's money stable. This helped the economy grow and kept prices from rising too fast.
During his six years as Minister of Finance, Chile's economy improved, with growth reaching 6% by 2004. He is the longest-serving Minister of Finance in Chile's history.
Later, under President Michelle Bachelet, Eyzaguirre served in other important roles:
- He was the Minister of Education from 2014 to 2015.
- He was the Minister General Secretariat of the Presidency from 2015 to 2017. This role involves helping the president manage the government's plans.
- He returned as Minister of Finance from 2017 to 2018.
Economic Ideas and Political Views
Nicolás Eyzaguirre has shared his thoughts on economic topics. He has talked about "extractivism," which is when a country mainly relies on taking natural resources, like minerals, from the ground. He believes that countries should try to develop more complex industries, not just extract raw materials. He points to Australia's mining sector as a good example, where they also have skilled workers and make their own machinery.
He also supported the idea of a new political constitution for Chile in a public vote in 2022.
