Nicolás Eduardo Lindley López (born November 16, 1908 – died May 3, 1995) was a Peruvian military leader. He served as the President of Peru for a few months in 1963. He was the 48th person to hold the title of President of Peru.
Early Life and Military Career
Nicolás Lindley López was born in Lima, Peru, in 1908. His family had roots from England. He went to a school called the Anglo-Peruvian School.
In 1926, he joined the Chorrillos Military School. He finished his studies there in 1930. Lindley had a very successful career in the military. By 1960, he became the top general of the Peruvian Army.
Becoming President
On July 18, 1962, Lindley, along with Ricardo Pérez Godoy, took part in a military action. This action aimed to prevent a specific election outcome. They wanted to make sure new elections were held fairly.
Initially, Pérez Godoy led the new military government. Lindley served as the Minister of Defense. The main goal of this temporary government was to organize new elections. They wanted to quickly hand over power to a new, elected president.
However, Pérez Godoy seemed to want to stay in power longer. Because of this, Lindley took over as the leader on March 3, 1963.
Time in Office
Nicolás Lindley López was President of Peru for a short time. He led the country until July 28, 1963. On that date, Fernando Belaúnde became the new president. Belaúnde had won the new elections that Lindley's government helped organize.
Later Life
After his time as president, Lindley continued to serve his country. From 1964 to 1975, he worked as the Peruvian ambassador to Spain. This means he represented Peru in Spain.
After 1975, he retired from both politics and military life. He later returned to Peru. Nicolás Lindley López lived until he was 86 years old. He passed away in Lima in 1995.
