The Swatch Group Story

In the early 1980s, the Swiss watch industry was in trouble. Companies like ASUAG and SSIH were struggling. They faced strong competition from Japanese watchmakers like Seiko. A group of Swiss bankers asked Nicolas Hayek to help. They wanted him to oversee the closing down of these companies.

But Nicolas Hayek believed the Swiss watch industry could still be successful. He thought that ASUAG and SSIH could recover. They just needed to change how they operated and how they sold their different watch brands.

Nicolas found many problems. These included issues with products, sales plans, and old-fashioned leadership. He said that ASUAG, for example, had over 100 separate companies. Many of them did their own marketing and research. He thought this was not efficient.

He invested a lot in using machines for production. He also made sure parts were standard and could be swapped easily. This helped to make watches cheaper and better quality. Production was brought together in one place.

At the same time, the amazing Swatch watch was invented. This watch used only 51 parts. Traditional watches needed almost 100 parts. The Swatch watch was still accurate and good quality. Because it used fewer parts, it was much cheaper to make.

The Swatch watch helped the Swiss watch industry greatly. It allowed them to win back a large part of the market. This was the market for less expensive watches that they had lost to Japanese companies. The colorful plastic Swatch watch became famous for its fun marketing. But Nicolas Hayek always said it was a big technological step forward first.

Nicolas Hayek led the reorganization of ASUAG and SSIH for over four years. He helped them merge into one new group. In 1985, Nicolas and a group of Swiss investors bought most of the shares in this new company. He became the chairman and CEO in 1986. The company was first called SMH. Later, it changed its name to The Swatch Group.

Nicolas Hayek played a huge role in the success of The Swatch Group. The group owns many famous watch brands. These include Swatch, Blancpain, Omega, Longines, Rado, Tissot, and Breguet. The plans he created in the 1980s helped the entire Swiss watch industry. It regained its top position worldwide after 1984.

Nicolas Hayek also helped create the Smart Car. This is a small European car designed for city driving. It was made by Mercedes-Benz. The original ideas for the car were linked to the Swatch name. Even today, parts of the car, like its changeable body panels, show the Swatch idea. The name "Smart" comes from combining "Swatch" and "Mercedes" with the word "art."

In 1995, Nicolas's daughter, Nayla, joined the Board of Directors of The Swatch Group. In 2003, his son, Nick Jr., became the CEO of the company. Nicolas Hayek remained the Chairman of the Board until he passed away. After his death, Nayla was chosen to take his place as Chairman.

Passing Away

Nicolas Hayek died suddenly on June 28, 2010. He passed away from a cardiac arrest while working. This happened at the Swatch Group headquarters in Biel, Switzerland.
