The Nicolum River is a river in British Columbia, Canada. It starts in the Cascade Mountains. The river flows northwest and joins the Coquihalla River near the town of Hope, British Columbia. A special place called Nicolum River Provincial Park is located where these two rivers meet.
River's Name History
The name of the Nicolum River has changed a few times. In 1942, a government survey group suggested changing its official name to Nicolum Creek. This was because they thought it was a smaller stream.
However, in 1991, the name was changed back to Nicolum River. This change happened because local people usually called it a river. Old maps also show different names for the river. On John Arrowsmith's map from 1862, it was called "Nkalaoum River." On Joseph Trutch's map from 1871, it was called "Nicolume River."
The Hope Slide Event
In 1965, a very large landslide happened near the river. This event is known as the Hope Slide. During this slide, a small lake on the river, called Outram Lake, was covered by the moving earth and rocks. The landslide was so big that it also changed the path of the Nicolum River.
