A Mountain of History: The Last Spike

Nicomen Mountain played a special role in Canadian history. In 1884, a very important event happened here. It was called the "Last Spike" ceremony for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

This ceremony marked the meeting point of two railway construction teams. One team was building from Hope. The other was building from Port Moody. They met at Nicomen, completing a 90-mile stretch of track. This part of the railway went through the lower Fraser Valley. The railway was built under a contract by Andrew Onderdonk.

What is Nicomen Mountain Used For?

Nicomen Mountain has been important for the railway for a long time. The railway uses the mountain as a quarry. A quarry is a place where rocks and gravel are dug out of the ground. This gravel is used for "ballasting." Ballasting means putting gravel under railway tracks to make them stable.

Besides quarrying, people also use the area for other activities. Logging, which is cutting down trees for wood, happens here. Farming also takes place in the surrounding areas. Even with these activities, most of Nicomen Mountain is still covered in forests.
