Personal Life
Nikita Nagornyy was born on February 12, 1997, in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. His grandmother was a big inspiration in his life. She took him to a gymnastics club when he was a boy to help him be more disciplined. He also enjoys making YouTube vlogs in his free time.
In 2018, Nagornyy married Daria Spiridonova, who is also a famous Russian gymnast and an Olympic medalist. They had a son in June 2023.
Gymnastics Career
Nagornyy started gymnastics when he was just six years old. He looked up to famous gymnasts like Alexei Nemov and Kohei Uchimura.
Junior Success
As a young gymnast, Nagornyy showed amazing talent. At the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics, he was the star of the competition. He won three gold medals (on pommel horse, rings, and parallel bars), a silver medal in the all-around, and a bronze on vault. He was the most successful male gymnast at the event.
Senior Career Highlights
Nagornyy moved up to the senior level in 2015. He quickly made a name for himself by winning the gold medal on vault at the 2015 European Championships.
Over the next few years, he became a key member of the Russian team. He helped them win team gold medals at the European Championships in 2016 and 2018. He also won individual medals on floor, parallel bars, and in the all-around.
His biggest year was 2019. At the 2019 World Championships, he led the Russian team to a gold medal. He then won the individual all-around gold, beating his teammate and the defending champion. To top it off, he also won a gold medal on the vault.
Olympic Glory
Nagornyy competed in his first Olympics in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. He and his teammates won the silver medal in the team competition.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021), Nagornyy had even greater success. He led the Russian Olympic Committee team to a historic gold medal. It was the first time in 25 years that a Russian men's team had won Olympic gold. Individually, he won two bronze medals: one in the all-around competition and another on the horizontal bar.
The 'Nagornyy' Skill
In 2021, Nikita Nagornyy performed a brand-new skill during his floor routine at the European Championships. The move was a triple back pike, a very difficult tumbling pass. Because he was the first to do it successfully in a major competition, the skill was officially named the Nagornyy. It is one of the hardest skills in men's gymnastics.
Activities Outside of Gymnastics
In 2016, Nagornyy joined the National Guard of Russia. In 2020, he became a leader in the Young Army Cadets National Movement, a Russian youth organization.
Because of his public support for the Russian government and military, some countries have placed sanctions on him. Sanctions are penalties or restrictions that one country puts on another country or individuals. Canada and the United States are among the countries that have sanctioned Nagornyy.
