Nikolay Nikolayevich Benardos (in Russian: Никола́й Никола́евич Бенардо́с) was a brilliant inventor from the Russian Empire. Born in 1842, he was of Greek descent. In 1881, he introduced a groundbreaking method called carbon arc welding. This was the very first practical way to join metals using an electric arc.

The Life of Nikolay Benardos

Nikolay Benardos was born on July 8, 1842. His birthplace was Benardosivka, a village in the Kherson Governorate of the Russian Empire.

Discovering Electric Arc Welding

During the 1860s and 1870s, Nikolay spent a lot of time studying the electric arc. He worked on his ideas in different cities, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Kineshma.

He was the first person to figure out how to use an electric arc to heat the edges of steel sheets. He would heat them until they became soft enough to be joined together. In 1881, he proudly showed off this new way of joining metals in Paris, France. His invention, called Elektrogefest, changed how people worked with metal forever.

Later Years

Later in his life, Nikolay faced money problems. Because of this, he could not stay in the capital city. In 1899, he moved to Fastiv, which is now part of Kyiv Oblast in Ukraine. He passed away in Fastiv at the age of 63 in 1905.

M. M. Benardos Museum

A special museum was opened in Pereiaslav, Ukraine, in 1981. It was created to celebrate 100 years since Nikolay Benardos invented the Elektrogefest. The museum has five rooms that show different parts of his life and work. These rooms include a study, a living room, a workshop, a laboratory, and an exhibition hall.
