About Nils Petter Molvær
Nils Petter Molvær grew up on an island in Norway called Sula, Møre og Romsdal. When he was 19, he moved to study jazz at the Trondheim Music Conservatory.
After his studies, he joined some cool bands. One was called Jazzpunkensemblet with Jon Eberson. Another important band was Masqualero. In this band, he played with famous musicians like Arild Andersen, Jon Christensen, and Tore Brunborg.
Early Music and Khmer
Masqualero recorded several albums with ECM Records. Molvær also played with other artists from ECM. Then, in 1997, he released his first solo album, Khmer. This album was a mix of jazz, rock, electronic sounds, and hip-hop beats. It was very different from the usual quiet jazz music that ECM was known for.
Molvær's trumpet sound was special. He often used electronic effects, which made his trumpet sound unique. His music reminded some people of the famous trumpeter Miles Davis. For the first time, ECM released singles from his album. These were "Song of Sand" and "Ligotage".
In 2000, he released his second album, Solid Ether. After this, Molvær left ECM. He has made many more albums since then. He also writes music for movies and plays.
Working with Other Artists
Nils Petter Molvær often works with guitarist Eivind Aarset. He has also played with a group called Tabla Beat Science. This group was started by Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell.
