Nils Petter Molvær (born September 18, 1960) is a famous Norwegian jazz trumpeter, composer, and music producer. He is known for being a pioneer of "future jazz." This is a cool music style that mixes jazz with electronic music. His album Khmer is a great example of this sound.

About Nils Petter Molvær

Molvær grew up on an island in Norway called Sula, Møre og Romsdal. When he was 19, he moved to study jazz at the Trondheim Music Conservatory from 1980 to 1982.

Early Music Career

After his studies, Nils Petter Molvær joined several music groups. He was part of a band called Jazzpunkensemblet and another important group named Masqualero. In Masqualero, he played alongside other talented musicians like Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen. This band released several albums with ECM Records, a well-known music label.

Molvær also worked with other artists from ECM Records before releasing his first solo album.

Solo Albums and Unique Sound

In 1997, Molvær released his first solo album, Khmer. This album was special because it blended different music styles. It mixed jazz, rock, electronic sounds, and even hip-hop beats. This was quite different from the usual "chamber jazz" music that ECM Records was known for.

Molvær's trumpet sound is unique. He often uses electronic effects to change how his trumpet sounds. This style was inspired by the famous trumpeter Miles Davis. For the first time, ECM Records even released singles from his album, like "Song of Sand."

In 2000, he released his second album, Solid Ether. After this, Molvær left ECM Records. He has continued to record many more albums since then. He also creates music for movies and theater plays.

Collaborations with Other Artists

Nils Petter Molvær often works with the guitarist Eivind Aarset. He has also played with a group called Tabla Beat Science. This group was started by Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell.
