About Nina Bunjevac
Nina Bunjevac was born in Welland, Ontario, Canada, in 1973. Her parents were immigrants from Yugoslavia. When Nina was two years old, her mother moved with Nina and her sister back to Zemun in Yugoslavia. This move was to get away from her father, Peter. Sadly, her father later died in Toronto in 1977 in an accident involving a bomb.
Her Education and Early Career
Nina attended the Djordje Krstic School for Applied Arts in Yugoslavia. In 1990, she returned to Toronto, Canada. There, she studied at the Central Technical School. She then graduated from OCAD in 1997.
Before becoming a full-time cartoonist, Nina worked in different art fields. She was a painter, an illustrator, and an art teacher. Later, she started creating comics using pen and ink.
Her Work in Comics
Nina Bunjevac's comics have been featured in many international publications. She won a special award called The Golden Pen of Belgrade. This was for her cover art for a book titled Ženski strip na Balkanu. This book was later released in English as Balkan Comics: Women on the Fringe.
Her first collection of comics, Heartless, came out in 2012. It won a Doug Wright Spotlight Award in 2013. She then released a memoir called Fatherland in 2014. This book won the Best Book award at the 2015 Doug Wright Awards.
Nina's third book, Bezimena, was also very successful. It was chosen for the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2019. It also won the Artemisia prize in France for Best Drawing. In Italy, it received the Best Book Jury Prize at the 2019 Lucca Comics and Games event.
