Nino Khurtsidze (born August 28, 1975 – died April 22, 2018) was a talented Georgian chess player. She achieved the high chess titles of Woman Grandmaster (WGM) in 1993 and International Master (IM) in 1999. Nino was known for winning several important youth chess championships.

Early Chess Success

Nino Khurtsidze showed her chess skills from a young age. She won the World Girls U-16 Chess Championship in 1991. This competition took place in Guarapuava, Brazil. The next year, in 1992, she won the European U-20 Girls Championship.

World Junior Champion

Nino became a World Girls U-20 Chess Champion not once, but twice! She won this major title in both 1993 and 1995. These wins showed she was one of the best young female chess players in the world.

Georgian Champion

Nino also had great success in her home country. She won the main Georgian Chess Championship in 1998. She also won the women's Georgian championship five times. These victories happened in 1989, 1993, 2005, 2006, and 2013.

Competing on the World Stage

Nino Khurtsidze regularly competed in the Women's World Chess Championship. This is a very important tournament for female chess players.

World Championship Appearances

She played in the Women's World Championship many times. These events used a knockout format. This means players are eliminated after one loss. Nino competed in 2000, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2015, and 2017.

Her best results in these championships were:

  • In Moscow in 2001, she reached the final eight players. She was defeated by Zhu Chen, who went on to win the championship.
  • In Yekaterinburg in 2006, she again reached the final eight. Alisa Galliamova defeated her in this round.
  • In Tehran in 2017, she made it to the final sixteen players. She was defeated by Antoaneta Stefanova.

Team Competitions

Nino was a key player for the Georgian national chess team. She represented Georgia in many team events.

  • She played in the Women's Chess Olympiad in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2006, and 2012.
  • She also played in the Women's World Team Chess Championship in 2007, 2011, and 2013. In 2011, her team won the bronze medal!
  • Nino also competed in the Women's European Team Chess Championship multiple times. These were in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013.
  • She also played in the European Club Cup for Women with different teams.

Other Achievements

In 1998, Nino won the Women's championship for Universities in Rotterdam. This event was organized by the FISU.

In 2004, she finished second in the Essen Open tournament. In 2005, she was the second highest-rated female chess player in Georgia. Her FIDE rating was 2420. In 2012, Nino took part in the FIDE Women's Grand Prix tournament in Jermuk, Armenia.

Nino lived in Tbilisi, Georgia. She was coached for many years by Grandmaster Konstantin Aseev.

Nino Khurtsidze passed away in April 2018.
